Ultzama Mycological Park

Thanks to its privileged climate and rich woodlands, the Ultzama Valley has become one of Navarre’s top destinations for mushroom tourism. The abundance and quality of its mushrooms attract visitors from near and far. However, as the popularity of this activity grew, it became necessary to protect the valley’s natural resources and ensure sustainable harvesting.

In 2007, the Ultzama Mycological Park was created to regulate mushroom collection and prevent overexploitation while preserving ecological balance. A daily limit of 500 collectors (0.2 people per hectare) was established to ensure sustainable activity. This responsible approach is based on technical, social, and ecological criteria, avoiding overcrowding and damage to forest ecosystems.

The park offers more than just mushroom picking. It provides personalized permits, expert guidance on the best species and areas depending on the season, guided outings, and mushroom-focused events. A park ranger ensures best practices and collector safety. There is also an exhibition space and educational programs to enhance the visitor experience.

In recognition of its efforts, the Ultzama Mycological Park received the 5th Environmental Good Practices Award in 2008 for its commitment to sustainable local development.
