Baztan Valley

Baztan is Navarre’s largest municipality, covering 373.55 km². It includes the upper basin of the Bidasoa River, which is called the Baztan River in this area. The municipality is made up of 15 villages (Almandoz, Aniz, Arizkun, Arraioz, Azpilkueta, Berroeta, Ziga, Elizondo, Elbete, Erratzu, Garzain, Irurita, Lekaroz, Amaiur and Oronoz-Mugaire), many neighborhoods and scattered farmhouses. Unlike other similar municipalities, it is not divided into local councils, though each village has a representative. In addition to the town hall, Baztan also has a General Assembly, a traditional institution that manages communal land and resources.

Ziga

A postcard-perfect village with a surprisingly grand church. The San Lorenzo Church stands out for its size. It’s accessed via a staircase from the square, surrounded by charming flower-filled houses. After a stroll through Ziga, don’t miss the Baztan viewpoint, offering stunning views of the central valley. Easily accessible by local road—don’t forget your camera!

Irurita

The second-largest town in the valley by population. Beyond the beautiful San Salvador Church, Irurita is known for its civil architecture. Wandering its streets and soaking in the atmosphere is a must. Key sights include the Plaza of the Duchess of Goyeneche, the Jauregizuria Palace, and the Gastón House. The square of Irurita, nicknamed "the rebound plaza," is famed for the traditional glove game or laxoa. If you catch a match, you’ll witness the local passion firsthand!

Arizkun

Another picturesque village near Elizondo, known for its noble architecture and deep-rooted traditions. The Bozate neighborhood is especially notable, once home to the "agotes," a historically marginalized group. Other highlights include the Ursua Palace, Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Santxotena Museum—an open-air sculpture park by Xabier Santxotena, a disciple of Jorge Oteiza. It’s a beautiful fusion of art, nature, and Basque mythology.

Erratzu

Near Arizkun and surrounded by mountains lies Erratzu, a village of 650 residents with lovely farmhouses, green landscapes, and peaceful ambiance. Stroll its streets and head up to Izpegi Pass for breathtaking views and a rest area where you can eat or pick up a souvenir. With kids in tow, don’t miss the famous Xorroxin waterfall.
